Since we live in a democracy,(maybe not in the last 8 years) I wanted to start a blog about our progress on this project, so that it is transparent and not just three people in a dark room making decisions that effect the entire group. Please feel free to comment at any stage.
So, as many of you know I have been in contact with the principal at Jane Addams High School about the possibly of creating a garden on the property. Please see here for photos and location. He has been very much open to the idea and told me he would get back to me with information about the possibly of project moving forward.
In the meantime, Eli has been soliciting companies and individuals for donations or contributions to help this garden become a reality. Danielle has contacted several contacts she has in architectural and design firms, so we can get their consultation on the design of the garden and possibly creating a workshop for us, so that this garden is a learning piece for us as well, focusing on sustainable design and urban gardening.
Everything seemed to be moving smoothly, but about a week later, I received an email from Mr. Leslie, principal at Jane Addams, he informed me he would not longer be the principal at Jane Addams, but he would forward our conversations to his adversary. I followed with an email to introduce myself, the group, and the project. A week went by with no response.
Finally, June 19th, I received a phone call from Ms. Washington the new principal and I met with her and the head groundskeeper on the logistical issues of us working on school grounds. She will let me know by Monday of Tuesday if CMSD Facilities will allow us to do the garden and it does violate union rules. We need to come up with a 1 page proposal for the garden. How we intend to use? Etc. She said we should consider a component that included students from the school, but that we should do it in a manner that includes a faculty manner, because otherwise it would require background checks for all involved, which would be a pain, but as long a teacher is present it would no different as us being a guest speaker in class. She gave me the name of two teachers that were involved in the garden before. One of which is the advisor for the Environment Club, which has about 8 members. They currently go out and do projects with the advisor off school time, so they might be a good resource.
So we need to come up with a concept/proposal for the garden, so she can get it approved by the district. She does not see approval as an issue, just a necessary step.
Any comments on the proposal greatly appreciated.
